  • Sharks' Jake Walman: Slings assist

Walman notched an assist, three shots on goal, two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

The defensive pair of Walman and Cody Ceci was on the ice for the Sharks' two goals and none of the Sabres' tallies. With four points over five contests since he returned from an upper-body injury, Walman doesn't appear to have lost a step. The defenseman is at two goals, 11 helpers, 53 shots on net, 29 blocked shots, 16 hits and a plus-4 rating over 18 outings this season while seeing top-pairing minutes.

  • Sharks' Alexander Wennberg: Deals helper in loss

Wennberg provided an assist in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

Wennberg has two goals and three assists over his last four contests. The center has been flanked by Luke Kunin and Tyler Toffoli recently, and that's a line combination that can play a valuable two-way game. Wennberg is up to five goals, seven helpers, 29 shots on net, 18 blocked shots and a minus-5 rating over 23 appearances. He'll likely stay on the third line as long as Mikael Granlund and Macklin Celebrini stay healthy.

  • Sharks' William Eklund: Puts up assist

Eklund managed an assist and two blocked shots in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

Eklund was a game-time decision for Saturday, but he was able to play 20:08, in line with his usual workload. He has two goals and six assists over his last seven contests as he continues to thrive in a top-six role. The winger is up to four goals, 13 helpers, 36 shots on net and a minus-3 rating through 22 outings. Eklund offers valuable category coverage, but his main contributions are his offensive numbers.

  • Sharks' Tyler Toffoli: Nabs assist Saturday

Toffoli logged an assist, six shots on goal and four hits in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

Toffoli set up a Luke Kunin tally in the second period. Those two forwards have been centered by Alexander Wennberg in recent contests, making for a veteran trio to absorb tougher minutes while freeing up Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith for easier assignments. Toffoli has three goals and two assists over his last six games, though his four-game slump earlier in November seemingly cost him a top-line role for now. The 32-year-old winger remains fairly productive with nine goals, seven helpers, 72 shots on net, 16 hits and a minus-8 rating through 23 appearances.

  • Sharks' Luke Kunin: Deposits goal in loss

Kunin scored a goal on two shots, added four PIM and doled out four hits in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

Kunin has two goals, five shots and 15 hits over his last four contests. The 26-year-old remains in a bottom-six role, though he's done a decent job of contributing depth scoring and physical play. For the season, he's at four goals, eight points, 26 shots, 56 hits, 34 blocked shots, 21 PIM and a minus-4 rating over 23 appearances. Kunin's production limits his fantasy value to deep formats that reward non-scoring numbers.

  • Sharks' Fabian Zetterlund: Tallies in loss

Zetterlund scored a goal and added four hits in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

Zetterlund had been held off the scoresheet in the previous two games. He's had some trouble generating chances, posting just three shots on net over his last five outings, which will certainly take the wind out of his sails on offense. The winger is at eight goals, 15 points, 44 shots on net, 50 hits, 23 blocked shots and a plus-4 rating across 23 appearances in a top-six role this season.

  • Sharks' Mackenzie Blackwood: Loses to Sabres

Blackwood stopped 27 of 30 shots in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres. The fourth goal was an empty-netter.

Blackwood was decent, but he allowed two goals in the third period to squander a 2-1 lead. The 27-year-old netminder lost back-to-back starts in regulation for the first time since late October, which is a testament to just how good he's been for a last-place team. Overall, Blackwood is at a 4-7-3 record with a 3.07 GAA and a .907 save percentage through 14 appearances. The Sharks' homestand continues Monday versus the Kings.

  • Sharks' William Eklund: Set to play

Eklund (undisclosed) will play versus the Sabres on Saturday, Max Miller of NHL.com reports.

Eklund was considered a game-time decision, but he won't end up missing a game with the issue. The 22-year-old will play in his usual top-line role and will skate alongside Fabian Zetterlund and Mikael Granlund.

  • Sharks' William Eklund: Game-time decision

Eklund (undisclosed) will be a game-time decision Saturday against Buffalo, according to Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News.

Eklund has four goals, 16 points, 35 shots on net, 13 blocked shots and 14 hits over 21 appearances this season. Will Smith will return to the lineup versus the Sabres, but it's unclear who will be scratched if Eklund is fit to play.

  • Sharks' Vitek Vanecek: Backing up Saturday

Vanecek (upper body) will be the backup goaltender versus Buffalo on Saturday, per Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News.

Vanecek did not dress Thursday in St. Louis due to the injury, which led to Yaroslav Askarov making his San Jose debut. Vanecek is 2-5-1 with a 3.36 GAA and an .899 save percentage. Mackenzie Blackwood will get the start against the Sabres, and Askarov is projected to be a healthy scratch.

  • Sharks' Mackenzie Blackwood: Back in goal Saturday

Blackwood will start Saturday at home against the Sabres, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Blackwood has dropped three of his last four outings, despite posting a respectable .900 save percentage with a 2.98 GAA in that span. Overall, Blackwood is 4-6-3 with a .907 save percentage and a 3.07 GAA this season.

  • Sharks' Macklin Celebrini: Two apples in loss

Celebrini notched two assists in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues.

Celebrini banked secondary helpers on Alexander Wennberg's fourth and fifth goals of the season in the loss. Celebrini added three shots, two takeaways and a plus-1 rating in 23:48 of ice time. The British Columbia native turned the puck over four times in the loss, but he seems to be gaining the trust of head coach Ryan Warsofsky -- Celebrini's 23:48 of ice time in the contest was the most of any Shark and a season high for the highly-touted rookie. Celebrini has accounted for four goals, three assists and a minus-3 rating through 10 games.

  • Sharks' Mikael Granlund: Stays hot in defeat

Granlund distributed two helpers Thursday in a 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis.

Granlund registered the primary assist on each of Alexander Wennberg's markers. Granlund is on a four-game point streak consisting of two goals and four assists, and he's easily been San Jose's most consistent player on offense. The 32-year-old has been held off the scoresheet just seven times through 22 games, an impressive feat for a player on a team that is projected to finish towards the bottom of the standings. The left-shot Finnish forward leads the Sharks in points by a wide margin -- Granlund has nine goals and 15 assists, which is eight points more than any of his teammates.

  • Sharks' Alexander Wennberg: Two markers in loss

Wennberg scored twice, once on the power play, in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues.

Wennberg scored on the power play in the opening frame before tying the score at 2-2 with just nine seconds left in the third period to send the game to overtime. The Swedish forward could be turning the corner on offense -- he's registered multi-point outings in two of his last three games. Wennberg has compiled five goals, six assists, four PIM, 29 shots, 18 blocks, 13 hits and seven takeaways through 22 contests.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Solid in 2024-25 debut

Askarov made 29 saves on 31 shots in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues.

Askarov got off to a less-than-ideal start in his debut with the Sharks, allowing a goal just 11 seconds into the contest, but he settled in as the game went along. The 22-year-old currently has a chance to earn a role in the crease while Vitek Vanecek tends to an upper-body injury. Askarov inked a two-year deal with San Jose after being acquired in a trade from Nashville in August. Through four NHL appearances, the 22-year-old is 1-1-1 with a 2.38 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

  • Sharks' Vitek Vanecek: Not playing Thursday

Vanecek (upper body) will not dress Thursday in St. Louis, Max Miller of The Hockey News reports.

Yaroslav Askarov will make his San Jose debut Thursday, while Mackenzie Blackwood will be the backup. Vanecek is in danger of losing his spot on the roster if Askarov is able to excel at the NHL level. Vanecek is 2-5-1 with a 3.36 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 10 games this season.
